How to make churros with little kids at home

Making churros can seem like a daunting endeavor, and adding young children into the kitchen can be downright terrifying. Hot frying oil can be super dangerous and the possibilities of causing a huge mess are endless. If you have young kids at home and you’re craving a homemade churro it can feel so much easier to just leave the kids out entirely. But, you can easily include your kids and make memories as a family. Here are some tips on how to make homemade churros with your little kids.

  1. Assemble everything you need before starting to make your churros. You’ll want a large bowl for the dough, a wooden spoon, a lined baking sheet, and all of the contents of the Fiesta in a Box out and ready to use. Teach your kids about what everything is and how to use it.
  2. Making the dough. The dry mix packet that comes in the Fiesta in a Box kit requires boiling water to assemble. If you have one, use a kettle to boil the water instead of a pot on the stove and carefully pour the water into the bowl with the dough mix, begin to stir until it is safe to let your kids handle the dough. Then, your kids can use a spoon or even their hands to incorporate everything together.
  3. Piping the churros. Your kids can help roll the dough into a ball and form a roll to place inside the churro maker. To pipe the dough into the classic churro shape they can hold the churro maker over the lined baking sheet and twist the top. Then, just use your finger to drop the churro onto the baking sheet.
  4. Bake your churros. Make sure to teach your young children oven safety; when you pull the baked churros out of the oven, ensure that the hot pan is out of reach. You can also air fry churros as well! Check out this video tutorial to show you how!

Top and Fill. The San Diablo Fiesta in a Box Kit comes with its traditional dulce de leche filling and cinnamon sugar shakers. Place the baked, air-fried, or deep-fried churros onto a plate once they are cool enough to handle, and let your kids shake the cinnamon sugar onto their churros. You can then fill the churros with the dulce de leche; or, save it for yourself and let your kids eat the churros without sugar or filling for less mess. You can also let them dip their churros into something from your kitchen like jam or yogurt for a healthier option. Let your kids get creative with their flavors and toppings. You can add sprinkles or crushed candy for an extra special treat.
