Growing up, Halloween was my absolute favorite holiday of the year! I planned my costumes months in advance and collected pillowcases full of candy around my neighborhood every year. In my 20s I started a tradition of a scary movie marathon to replace the excitement of trick-or-treating. Now that I have kids, Halloween is fun for different reasons. I love helping my girls with their *unique* costume ideas (my youngest insisted on being a unicorn fairy princess a couple of years ago). The night of the big event, however, has gotten less exciting. My husband and I love handing out candy but now that my kids are teenagers, things have gotten less festive. That’s why I started a new Halloween tradition with the neighborhood parents, now that dozens of Smarties and Snickers have lost their charm. Every year, we make Halloween fun with churros! I deep fry or premake tons of mini churros in the oven and invite our friends to bring their craziest fillings and dips. Pumpkin cheesecake is a fan favorite but things can get pretty spooky with pomegranate and dark chocolate “bloody” churros decorated with sugar “knife” shards. Then- we let our kids vote on the winner! Check out some of San Diablo’s Halloween ideas with this video tutorial of spooky churro fillings and decorations. Start a unique Halloween tradition this year and keep the spooky spirit alive no matter how young (or young at heart) you may be! Halloween isn’t just for kids anymore.
