Whether your churros are for kids or you’re just a kid at heart, colorful churros can brighten anyone’s day. Plus they are delicious. Here are some ways to add a pop of color to your churros.
Colorful churro dough:
After you have finished making your dough (either using your San Diablo dry mix packet or handmade dough in our online recipe book) add your dough to a new bowl and slowly add drops of food coloring. Mix until the color is perfectly distributed throughout the dough. Then, put your colorful dough into your San Diablo Churro Maker and finish frying or baking your churros as usual.
For rainbow churros, separate your dough evenly into multiple bowls and dye the dough the colors of your choice. Roll out each colorful dough into a snake and bundle each color together to form a log with distinct colorful stripes. Load the log into the barrel of the Churro Maker and as you twist out the dough, it will come out multicolored and beautiful!
Colorful glaze, dips, and fillings:
To make a simple glaze, combine milk (or water), powdered sugar, vanilla, and food coloring until it reaches your preferred consistency. After cooking your churros, dip/drizzle/coat your churros in your colorful glaze. For a more opaque color, make a thicker glaze with milk and extra powdered sugar. For a more transparent color, make a thinner glaze with less milk or water. You can use a glaze in place of cinnamon sugar as the “glue” for your toppings.
For a simple colorful filling (and still just as colorful), dye sweetened condensed milk to the color of your choice and drizzle over or fill your churro.
For other colorful dips and fillings, make the sauce of your choice and add food coloring to your preference. This will work best on thicker, light-colored fillings and dips such as marshmallow fluff or cream cheese filling. You can also use fillings that are naturally colorful such as jams or fruit-based sauces.
Colorful sugars and toppings:
One other way to add a splash of brightness to your churros is with colorful sugars! You can buy colored sugar at any grocery store, or dye your own sugar at home. All you’ll need is white granulated sugar and food coloring. To combine the food coloring and sugar to make a colorful sugar topping, we suggest using a jar with a tight-fitting lid, or a zip-lock bag. Drip the food coloring onto the sugar, close the lid or bag, and shake vigorously for about 1 minute. Adjust the color with additional food coloring and repeat if the color is too light.
Add flavor and natural color with citrus zest and powdered fruit or add a few drops of extract into your sugar such as peppermint, coconut, or orange for extra flavor.
You can also add edible glitter for a fun, sparkly churro topping.
For a fun and bright carnival feel, sprinkle your churros with cotton candy floss which comes in different colors and interesting flavors.
